Catacombe San Callisto

Today we talk about the Catacombs of San Callisto (Catacombs of Saint Callixtus), founded at the end of the 2nd century, the largest, most famous and busiest of Rome's catacombs, easily reachable from our hotel, in less than half an hour,  by subway metro B Line from Castro Pretorio stop to Circo Massimo stop, then Bus 118

The Catacombe di San Callisto are the largest, most famous and busiest of Rome's catacombs. Founded at the end of the 2nd century and named after Pope Callixtus I, they became the official cemetery of the newly established Roman Church

In the 20 km of tunnels explored to date, archaeologists have found the tombs of 500.000 people and seven popes who were martyred in the 3rd century

The patron saint of music, St Cecilia, was also buried here, though her body was later removed to the Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

When her body was exhumed in 1599, over 1000 years after her death, it was apparently perfectly preserved, as depicted in Stefano Moderno's softy contoured sculpture, a replica of which is here.

Easily reachable from Hotel Montecarlo, when in Rome don't miss to visit the Catacombe di San Callisto (Catacombs of Saint Calixtus), the most famous catacombs in Rome ❤🏛

And not far from the Catacombe di San Callisto (Catacombs of Saint Callixtus), don't forget to take a look to the Porta San Sebastiano, the largest and one of the best-preserved gates passing through the Aurelian Walls in Rome. It was constructed by Emperor Aurelian in 275 AD and originally was known as the Porta Appia, the gate sat astride the Appian Way, the regina viarum (queen of the roads), which originated at the Porta Capena in the Servian Wall. During the Middle Ages probably it was also called Porta Accia and Porta Domine Quo Vadis. The present name Porta San Sebastiano is attested only since the second half of 15th century, due to the vicinity to the Basilica of San Sebastiano and its catacombs

It's not far from Hotel Montecarlo and very close to the catacombs of Rome along Appian Way ❤️🇮🇹
